Bear KompleX 3-Hole Grips Review: Premium Leather Done Right
Bear KompleX has built its CrossFit equipment reputation on quality materials at reasonable prices. Their 3-hole carbon leather grips are the best-executed leather grip option on the market — the carbon leather hybrid material solves the traditional leather durability problem while keeping the tactile feel that many athletes prefer over synthetic alternatives.
The Carbon Leather Material
Bear KompleX's "carbon leather" is a leather composite reinforced with carbon fiber throughout the material — not just a carbon fiber layer on top of leather, but a genuine hybrid. The result:
Better durability than standard leather. Regular leather grips dry out, crack, and eventually delaminate. The carbon reinforcement throughout the BK material significantly extends grip life.
Leather-like feel. The surface texture transmits bar feel more naturally than pure carbon fiber composites. Athletes who find carbon fiber grips feel too synthetic prefer the BK carbon leather for this reason.
Better chalk retention. The perforated design and leather texture hold chalk effectively, reducing the re-chalking frequency needed with pure synthetic grips.
Perforated Design
The perforations across the palm of the BK grips serve two purposes:
1. Breathability: Your palms sweat. Perforations allow air circulation that reduces moisture buildup during extended gymnastics sets. 2. Chalk distribution: Chalk distributes more evenly across a perforated surface, and excess chalk can exit through the holes rather than packing into a single layer.
This is a design feature that sounds minor but noticeably affects grip feel over the course of a long training session.
Three-Hole vs. Four-Hole Design
Bear KompleX's standard grip uses three finger holes (ring, middle, and index fingers) with the pinky outside the grip. Four-hole designs (like the Velites Quad Ultra) add pinky coverage.
In practice, most CrossFit athletes don't notice the pinky exclusion in standard bar work and pull-ups. The difference surfaces in ring muscle-ups — the rotation forces during the MU transition are distributed slightly differently with a three-hole grip. Athletes doing very high ring MU volume may prefer the Quad Ultra's four-hole design.
Wrist Strap
The wide velcro wrist strap is one of Bear KompleX's better design decisions. It's wider than most competitor straps, which distributes pressure more evenly and feels more secure during high-rep sets. The velcro holds through sweat conditions that would cause inferior straps to loosen.
Sizing
BK grips run slightly small in the finger holes. Size up from what you'd normally expect. If you're between sizes, definitely go larger.
Competition Performance
Bear KompleX grips are widely used at the Sanctional and Games level. They perform well under competition conditions — the break-in requirement is minimal (1-2 sessions), meaning you can buy them close to competition without the stiffness penalty of first-session grips.
BK vs. Velites Quad Ultra: The Decision
Choose Bear KompleX if: - You prefer leather feel to carbon fiber - You do moderate gymnastics volume (bar work, occasional ring MUs) - You want proven reliability at a tested price
Choose Velites Quad Ultra if: - You do high ring muscle-up volume specifically - You want maximum durability in high-sweat conditions - The four-hole design suits your grip mechanics better
Final Score: 4.4/5
Premium execution of the leather grip format. Slightly behind the Velites Quad Ultra for high-volume ring work, but the leather feel and excellent construction make these the go-to recommendation for athletes who prefer leather.
